STRUCTURED LEARNING EPISODE


Objectives

1. use the a word map for vocabulary building, following the prescribed steps.
2. utilize personal connection to the word to increase retention.
3. write an original sentence using the word to internalize the vocabulary.


Content

Getting to know words through word map. (Vocabulary Building)

Materials

computer, cards, strips of paper

Strategies

Activity

1. Read the story " The Most Dangerous Game " .
2. Select the unfamiliar words by making a Vocabulary List, as it is shown in the example.
3. Make a word map, as it is shown in this template.
4. Fill out the blank template to form word map following the sample given in #3.

Analysis

  1. The students will be paired and share their ideas about the story.
  2. Each pair will discuss about the vocabulary they have listed. Find the common new vocabulary for them and together derive its meaning.
  3. Big group presentation, there will be a parade of vocabulary.
  4. Explain the line of the story that contains the vocabulary being cited.
Abstraction
  1. Relate the ideas presented in the story in their own life experience.
  2. Use these words to construct statements that depicts their personal connection to the thoughts of the story.

Application

  1. Read a newspaper article or a news article at the internet. Pick out at least 5 words which are new to you. Draw a word map following the same template illustrated.
